And then you cut yourself with a knife while pealing potatoes; there is blood everywhere until you get a band-aid. Instead, be more careful and don’t cut yourself. Right? The same is with your health, why do you need to wait to fix it when the only thing you need to do is be more careful. Some of the benefits of being healthy are a reduced risk of obesity, better sleep, more energy, better mood, and a sharper, faster working mind, and of course a better sexual life. Some might tell you that it is never too late to change. Good News: It is Not! The sooner you do change the better and the easier. No one is getting any younger and no one can afford to wait to get healthy. Keep yourself from becoming part of the statistics of overweight people that suffer from preventable diseases and conditions, and start getting fit today with step one:
#1. Mindset: Everyone has heard that the mind is powerful, which is why mindset is THE MOST IMPORTANT step to getting healthy or making any change in your life. Have you ever bought the workout DVDs or equipment from TV or made a New Year’s resolution regarding your health? If those attempts to be healthy failed, it’s because you skipped step #1! Your health is a serious topic and should not be something that you sort of do sometimes or approach lackadaisically. When you truly decide to commit and take your health seriously, you will be able to give it your all and follow through. Do not attempt to move on to steps 2 or 3 before you are committed to yourself, because they will not work without the power of your mind and your will fail, again.
#2. Diet: Diet refers to what you eat, not some fad change in what you eat to lose weight. Your diet should be a permanent sustainable way of eating healthy. A healthy diet consists of: fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat or fat-free dairy, and protein. A 2,000 calorie diet is recommended for the average person and by using little tricks like healthy snacks, protein and fiber it is not that big of a challenge. Would you give a high performance car like a Lamborghini or a Porsche rubbing alcohol? Nooooo, you would not want to damage that machine. Your body is even better and it costs more than an expensive car, just go to a hospital as ask! So don’t feed your body a poor diet and expect it to be able to perform, feel good, or take care of you when you aren’t taking care of it. This is why diet is step #2 if you don’t eat a healthy diet you can’t expect your body to perform for step #3.
#3. Exercise: The surgeon general recommends 2.5 hours of moderate exercise per week to start having positive effects on health, but exercise time will vary depending on personal goals such as weight loss or maintenance. Muscle strengthening should be done 2 or more days each week as well as cardiovascular exercise. To help yourself do a variety of workouts create a plan and always record what you do on paper, iphone, or Blackberry. The record will serve as a goal for the next time you do the exercise as well as a motivation when you see improvement. Another motivation is to pick activities that you like and start with appropriate activities for you current fitness level. If you do not like to run, don’t run, do something else but get out of the couch. Once you have created a workout plan, Stick to it!
These steps are the basic framework for getting healthy, but remember to follow them in order for results. There is always more health information with the growing field of medical science.
